Uninsured vehicles to be ‘clamped or towed away’ from driveways from June
Monday, 30 May 2011
UK motorists who park uninsured vehicles on their driveways could have them impounded or clamped following new rulings set to start in June.
The Government aims to introduce its ‘continuous insurance enforcement’ order to reduce the number of uninsured drivers on the nation’s motorways who cause accidents and eventual insurance price hikes.
The law is designed to make it an offence for any driver to keep an uninsured vehicle, even if it is kept on private land. This will spark many vehicle owners into action as the current regulations state uninsured cars will only be impounded if found parked on a road.
Vehicle owners will still be able to apply for a Statutory Off Road Notice (SORN) to avoid the new law but the DVLA will be working with insurers to monitor uninsured vehicles using the Motor Insurance Database (MID).
Government Transport Minister, Mike Penning said: “These new powers will help us to take targeted action while freeing up police time to deal with the hard core of offenders.”
Nevertheless, the ‘continuous insurance enforcement’ plans have led to critics call for leniency in the rules with many law-abiding motorists potentially owning a vehicle without insurance due to admin errors made by insurance companies.
An AA spokesman said: “There must be some flexibility or leniency, otherwise this will become just another scam, like some cowboy parking ticket or clamping operations.”
