It has a motorway fuel economy of up to 70mpg. Hyundai also makes a non-plug-in version of the Ioniq, which is less efficient but cheaper.

Official Miles Per Gallon (MPG): 62.8mpg

Claimed electric range: 39 miles

Kia Niro PHEV

The Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid makes a great family car thanks to its size, plus offers excellent fuel economy.
Best used SUVs to buy

The SUV market is growing at a fast pace, with the newest models offering drivers a combination of practicality, ride comfort, safety and the option for hybrid or electric. While purchasing a new SUV is an exciting prospect, a huge range of used SUVs are available which will cost less to buy without compromising on good value.

Whether you know them as SUVs, 4x4s or jeeps, the vehicles on this list are judged by their spaciousness, smoothness while driving, as well as by the extras offered to utilise that ample interior space. Flexible in multiple roles – as a family car or off-roader – it’s definitely worth considering what bargains you can find (you may be surprised by the breadth and affordability of what’s available).

We’ve put together a list of the best used SUVs currently on the market, complete with average price ranges (varying by age and condition) and our top recommended model years.

Nissan Qashqai (2014-22)

Price from approx. £2,500 - £21,000

The Qashqai from Nissan was a real trend-setter when released back in 2008, arguably kickstarting the rise of the ‘crossover/SUV-type’ market by combining an SUV’s typical features with front-wheel drive. While the Qashqai’s boot space can be lacking for a family-focused SUV, as well as having a not-quite-excellent reliability record, the vehicle is undeniably well-crafted. Despite minor drawbacks, the driving experience is smooth and there’s plenty of space in the interior for passengers and equipment. Models offering four-wheel drive can also be found by those who need it.

Audi Q7 (2014-16)

Price from approx. £12,000 - £25,000

The Audi Q7 is a luxury SUV with seven seats, a high-end interior, and strong performance. It offers a comfortable ride, advanced tech, and a spacious cabin, making it perfect for families. Offered in both petrol and diesel engine options, the diesel engines are more powerful yet efficient, providing a good balance between performance and running costs. As Audi’s largest, most spacious and luxurious SUV, the Q7 is the ideal long-distance family car. However, even though it is one of the more expensive used SUVs on this list, it’s worth considering as on occasion, you can grab one cheaper in our online auction.

Ford Puma (2019-21)

Price from approx. £9,000 - £18,000

As the winner of the 2020 Car of the Year Award and a continued top favourite ever since, the Ford Puma is a small SUV, combining the sharp, fun driving experience of the well-known Ford Fiesta with added practicality. The interior is modern and practical, kitted out with everything you could need, it even has smart storage solutions like the unique MegaBox underfloor boot storage. This compact SUV is perfect for small families and is best suited for city driving and weekend getaways.

Peugeot 3008 (2016-20)

Price from approx. £10,000 - £17,000

Another ‘SUV-style’ vehicle, the Peugeot 3008 doesn’t offer four-wheel drive, which can be a deal-breaker for some motorists. The 3008 can also be pricey compared to some equivalent models on the market, too, yet as a common competitor in ‘end-of-year’ and ‘best-of’ lists, it’s definitely worth considering the advantages. You’re unlikely to be wowed or disappointed by the unremarkable driving experience, but with a 1.6-litre engine the 3008 can be pleasantly fuel-efficient. It also offers a range of perks expected of an SUV, including a spacious boot and boot floor, in addition to excellent quality and a stylish aesthetic.

Volvo XC90 (2013-16)

Price from approx. £12,000 - £25,000

The second-generation Volvo XC90, introduced in 2015, elevated the standard for luxury SUVs. Offering seven seats, great comfort levels and a sophisticated interior, the XC90 is also widely celebrated for safety. Inbuilt features include whiplash prevention and low-speed automatic driving for traffic jams. With agile suspension, upmarket aesthetics and practical handling of any driving task, it’s perfect for families who want a spacious, comfortable SUV.

KIA Sportage (2016-19)

Price from approx. £8,000 - £20,000

While not as fun to drive as some others in this category, the KIA Sportage makes up for its shortcomings in practicality and space. Offering a similar aesthetic to the Range Rover Evoque, the Sportage is renowned for reliability, comfort and ample equipment (including folding rear seats to boost your boot space). The interiors of older models may not have aged well, made up of sometimes cheap-feeling plastics. However, the standard seven-year warranty on all KIA vehicles still applies to many of the early Sportage models available to buy on the used market, offering a significant perk on top of its pragmatic capability.

Škoda Karoq (2017-21)

Price from approx. £10,000 - £24,000

Replacing the Yeti, the Škoda Karoq offers a blend of practicality and comfort. It features a spacious interior with flexible seating arrangements, making it perfect for families. You’ll find that even the older models come with a very modern interior with lots of user-friendly tech, making every day driving easier. With good fuel efficiency and a smooth drive, it’s a solid choice for long journeys or city commutes. However, some of the older models are known to be less economical, so if this is something you value then we would suggest sticking to the 2018 onwards models.

Land Rover Discovery Sport (2015-19)

Price from approx. £12,000 - £25,000

A favourite vehicle for many motorists, the Land Rover Discovery Sport offers a wide variety of benefits: from iconic aesthetics to comfortable driving and extreme spaciousness. While newer models may be more stylish, an extensive range of used models are usually available, offering seating for up to seven and more than enough room for luggage. Four-wheel drive guarantees good traction on tarmac as well as off-road, with plenty of gadgets and tech in the luxurious interior. While the Discovery Sport isn’t perfect – having a somewhat questionable record on reliability – the model’s flexibility and practicality is well worth considering at bargain prices.

Toyota RAV4 (2013-18)

Price from approx. £7,000 - £15,000

While it has been edged out somewhat by increased competition over the years, the Toyota RAV4 was once the car to kick-start the compact SUV craze back in 1994. While it may compare unfavourably to similar models on offer, the fourth-generation RAV4 is nevertheless a practical purchase for any motorist, known for its reliability and sharp handling as well as its spacious cabin and boot. The ride may be a bit on the firm side, but the SUV is capable both off-road and in the city. It’s definitely one worth considering as there are always some available at great used prices, with many owners swearing by the RAV4’s credibility.

BMW X3 (2011-17)

Price from approx. £8,000 – £18,000

The second-generation BMW X3 is a premium mid-size SUV, which delivers a dynamic driving experience without compromising on practicality. It features a high-quality interior with plenty of space for passengers and luggage. Known for its smooth driving experience and sporty handling, it’s just as good on the motorway as it is around town. The X3’s range of efficient engines and optional xDrive all-wheel-drive system enhance its versatility as a great all-rounder.

Prices correct as of March 2025.

Find a used SUV in the ASM Auction

We hope you’ve found our guide to the best used SUVs useful in your research. For motorists looking for used models at great value prices should consider these options, some of which are continually popular for their practicality.

ASM Auto Recycling provides regular online auctions supported by our site in Thame, Oxford.
Hidden Dangers When Buying a Used Car: Clocking, Cloning, Ringing and Cut & Shut Explained

What should you be looking out for when buying a used car? There are various practices that unscrupulous sellers can use to make more money or hide criminal activity. Car clocking, cloning, ringing and ‘cut and shuts’ are the main pitfalls to watch out for.

Clocking

Car clocking is when a vehicle’s odometer is tampered with, so that the mileage shown on the dashboard is lower than its actual mileage. The clock has literally been turned back. Sellers can make thousands more from a car with a significantly reduced mileage, and there are companies that openly advertise clocking services. Modern cars have digital odometers, but they can still be hacked into from a computer and adjusted. As well as costing you more than it should have done, buying a clocked car can be dangerous, as parts are more worn on an older car, and you are more likely to have an accident.

What to look out for

If a car’s mileage is too good to be true, it probably is. Most cars do an average of 10,000-12,000 miles per year, so if the age and mileage of a car don’t tally, it is worth doing some investigating. The seller should have the service history of the vehicle, or you can check its MOT history. This will provide the recorded mileage at every MOT the vehicle has ever had. A visual inspection of the vehicle could also reveal clues – if there are chips to the bonnet, this usually means plenty of motorway miles, as well as the driving pedals, gear stick and steering wheel showing signs of wear and tear.

Cloning

Car cloning is the practice of using legitimate number plates on a stolen vehicle. Criminals do this in order for stolen cars to go undetected on the road network. 100,000 registration plates are stolen every year in the UK, but fake plates can also be made to look like the real thing. If you buy a cloned car which is proven to be stolen, you will lose the car and the money you paid.

What to look out for

You should start to be suspicious if the car you’re being sold does not have a V5C registration document. Criminals may not often have this, or they may have produced a fake version. Using services like the AA’s Car Data Check or the HPI Check will confirm if the vehicle’s details are correct. Also check to see what the VIN number of the car is – this is a unique identification number, etched into a number of different parts of the car, such as the interior dashboard or the engine bay. If this number is different to the VIN number printed in the V5C document, the car has been cloned. You can also use a VIN checking service, to make sure that the car has not been reported as stolen.

Ringing

Car ringing is an extension of cloning. When criminals want to go a step further in hiding their tracks after cloning a vehicle, they will forge a new VIN number so it matches the official sources. They may also produce an accompanying fake V5C certificate. Forging a VIN number is very difficult, and is usually the preserve of specialist mechanics employed by criminal gangs. There was a big spike in ringing in the 1990s when written-off vehicles were repaired and put back on the road with new V5Cs. The government launched the Vehicle Identity Check (VIC) Scheme in response. Cars were subject to rigorous inspections, but the scheme was scrapped because of cost.

What to look out for

It can be challenging for an individual to find out if ringing has taken place. There are online tools available which allow you to see if a car has been stolen or written off in the past, or been inspected as part of the VIC scheme. Specialist companies exist that investigate potential cases of ringing.

Cut and shut

By far the most dangerous suspect on this list is the ‘cut and shut’. This is when the remains of two different vehicles are welded together and sold as a standalone car. These are usually the undamaged parts of written off vehicles, put together purely for reasons of profit and targeted at young drivers looking for a cheap car. The consequences for people lured into buying these automotive monsters are terrifying. The slightest impact could see them fall apart.

What to look out for

Legislation has been tightened against ‘cut n shuts’ in recent years, so it’s harder for criminals to create registration documents for these cars that don’t actually exist. Cut and shuts should be fairly easy to spot. You should be able to see discrepancies in upholstery, paintwork or even the actual join. Look out for the VIN in different parts of the car. If they are not the same number you know beyond doubt that it’s a cut and shut.

General tips on what to look out for when buying a used car

We’ve got a guide on some basic tips on buying second hand, but if you’re also looking to beat the used car scammers, here are the golden rules:

Always check the car’s history, mileage and MOT record

Look for signs of wear and tear

Find the VIN number

Don’t pay in cash (you’ll need an official record of the purchase in case there are problems)

Check for discrepancies with paintwork, panels and upholstery

Question any gaps in service history or MOTs

Know what you’re purchasing with ASM

If you’re looking to return a used car to a roadworthy condition, our online salvage auction offers the opportunity to purchase quality salvage vehicles at competitive prices. ASM Auto Recycling also offers up to 20% off the price of used spare parts supplied for the repair of vehicles purchased from ASM.

There comes a time in the life of any vehicle when it’s no longer safe or practical to use. What’s more, if you continue to drive an older car that’s not roadworthy, you could incur a hefty fine and some unnecessary points on your driving licence.

For thousands of drivers who have owned just a single vehicle for many years, they may have no idea how or when to get rid of a car. Nearly 1.5 million vehicles are scrapped in the UK each year, so it’s by no means a niche industry anymore.

So, if your vehicle is reaching the end of its life, fortunately there are many ways you can dispose of it responsibly. More importantly, there are numerous car scrapping pitfalls to avoid. Make sure you are aware of the things you should and shouldn’t do when disposing of an old car.

What to do with my old car: things you shouldn’t do

Don’t accept cash payments

It is illegal to take cash payment for scrap cars in England or Wales. Steer clear of anyone wishing to pay in cash. Payment has to be via cheque or electronic bank transfer.

Don’t take your car anywhere unlicenced to be scrapped

In order to legally dispose of your car, a scrap dealer has to be registered as an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF). ASM Auto Recycling is an ATF, which means we are licensed to dispose of old vehicles in a safe and sustainable way and abide by the Environment Agency’s ELV (End of Life Vehicles) guidelines.

Don’t forget the Certificate of Destruction (CoD)

Don’t forget to chase up your chosen ATF to receive the Certificate of Destruction (CoD). It should be delivered to you within seven working days after you have taken your car to be scrapped. If you don’t have a CoD then you are still legally responsible for the vehicle and any costs or fines associated with it.

What to do with my old car: things you should do

Do I need to notify the DVLA if I scrap my car?

You have to inform the DVLA that you’ve taken your vehicle to an ATF – providing you’re scrapping the car without keeping any of its parts. Failure to do so could result in a £1000 fine. Some ATFs, like ASM, do the paperwork for you. You should also apply to the DVLA if you wish to take the registration number from the end-of-life vehicle for use on another.

Do I need to SORN my car before I scrap it?

Yes. You should make the DVLA aware that the vehicle is off the road if you’re choosing to take parts from an end-of-life vehicle before scrapping it. The car must be kept off-road in a garage, on a drive or on private land.

Keep your personal details secure

Vehicle owners in England and Wales are required to demonstrate their photo ID and proof of address to any ATF, so ensure you’re sharing your personal information with a reputable firm.

Get your tax back

Make sure you reclaim any months remaining on your car tax using a V14 form. You should also get in contact with your car insurer and ask for a refund or the opportunity to credit an insurance policy for an alternative vehicle.

Removal of old cars is what we do

At ASM Auto Recycling, we’ll buy any vehicle in any condition. This means that even if it’s no longer roadworthy or has failed its MOT, we’ll pay you a fair price. Get an instant scrap valuation for your car, complete with a price guarantee. Providing your vehicle is correctly described, we’ll pay what we say to help you get rid of your old car.

Yes, you can sell a car without a log book, or V5C document. But it will be harder to do so without proof of ownership, and you might have to lower the price. It is easy to apply for a replacement log book, and reassure anyone buying the car that you are the registered owner.

If you are planning on selling your car, but you’ve realised you don’t have your log book, you might be concerned that it’s not possible to transfer ownership of your vehicle without it.

It’s important to be mindful of the fact that the UK government warns buyers against buying vehicles without log books. That’s because it makes it more difficult for buyers to tax and insure their new vehicle without it.

What is a log book and why do you need one?

A vehicle log book is also known as a V5C document. It is a registration document that proves you are the registered keeper of the vehicle. It will display your full name and address that can be used for any correspondence connected to the vehicle. Bear in mind this address does not need to be where the vehicle is stored.

The V5C form outlines all of the key information about your vehicle; all of which is stored by the DVLA within its database. This will include the colour and make of your vehicle, registration plate number, the size of its engine and even its chassis number. It will also detail how many other registered keepers the vehicle has had in the past.

It might surprise you that log books are still very much paper-based. While driving licences and vehicle tax (VED) have now been digitised, V5C documents are still created in the traditional method.

There have been some technological advancements in recent years, however. It is now possible to change details such as the owner’s name and the registered address by using www.gov.uk.

Do you need the V5 document to sell a car?

Fortunately, all is not lost if you have lost your vehicle log book. You can sell your car without a V5C document; the process is just more complicated.

The biggest issue sellers without log books find is that prospective buyers are often put off by the lack of a log book. They become suspicious, probably quite naturally, about the ownership of the car. They might think it has been stolen, as over 100,000 cars every year in the UK are. Or that the vehicle has not been well cared for. It will certainly be harder to sell a car without a log book than with one.

Checking a car’s documentation is one of the key things a buyer should do before they buy a second hand car. Without a log book the new owner will not be able to insure the vehicle.

Sellers without a V5C document should always be open and up front about this to reassure potential buyers. Of course, there are other precautions you can take to make it as easy as possible for buyers to apply for a new log book down the line. A bill of sale is arguably the most beneficial course of action.

The importance of creating a bill of sale

It’s vital that you cover all bases when you plan to sell a vehicle without a log book. Essentially, a bill of sale document will give your prospective buyer all the information they need to apply for a new log book using a V62 form. It’s also written proof that the buyer has accepted the terms of the sale and the condition of the vehicle.

If you want to create a fit and proper bill of sale that gives protection for you and prospective buyers, you’ll need to include the following:

Vehicle registration number

Mileage (at the point of sale)

Make and model of the vehicle

VIN plate number

Date of sale

Buyer’s full name and address

Your signature

Buyer’s signature

Even if you don’t prepare a bill of sale, you will have to inform the DVLA that you are selling your vehicle without a log book.

Can you get a replacement V5C document?

If you don’t want to have to create a bill of sale, you can always decide to apply for a replacement log book before you sell the vehicle.

You’ll need to reapply for the document with the DVLA. If none of the details have changed, you can do this online. Alternatively you can apply for a new V5C by phone or post from the DVLA using a completed V62 form. If any of the details about the car’s ownership have changed, you will have to complete a V62 form.

V62 forms are available from www.gov.uk and some post offices. If you choose to sell the vehicle without a log book, your prospective buyer won’t be able to apply for a new V5C document. The DVLA only accepts applications from the registered keeper on the original log book.

A replacement V5C document costs £25, which can be paid by credit or debit card via the website or over the phone. If you are leaving it up to your buyer to apply for a replacement log book, you could always take the cost of the new V5C document off the sale price of the vehicle as a gesture of goodwill.

Replacement log books often arrive within five working days for online and phone applications. However, those made via post using a V62 form can take up to six weeks to be processed.

Can I scrap my car without a log book?

Yes, it is legal to scrap your car without a log book. But the scrap yard must be registered as an Authorised Treatment Facility, and you should never pay cash to scrap your car. You should also inform the DVLA that your vehicle has been scrapped.

Sell your car to ASM Auto Recycling with or without your log book

At ASM Auto Recycling, we’ll buy any vehicle in any condition. This means that even if it’s a non-runner, an MOT failure or a car without a log book, we’ll pay you a fair price for your vehicle.

If the seller doesn’t have the log book, we require photo ID that shows the seller’s address. The seller will also be asked to sign a document which gives consent to pass title of ownership across to ASM.

Get an instant valuation for your car without a log book today, complete with a price guarantee. Providing your vehicle is correctly described, we’ll pay what we say.

The best small cars to buy second-hand

Small cars represent around 40% of the UK passenger car market, but how much does a great small car cost?

If you’re interested in the best small car to buy second-hand in the UK under £10,000, you’ve come to the right place. The cars in our list rank best for features like fuel economy, running costs and build quality. With a budget of £10,000 you will be looking at cars at least 4 or 5 years old, some with high mileages. But they can still be worth the money.

Don’t worry if your budget is less than £5,000. If you’re willing to go for an older model, there’s usually a bargain to be found on most of these small cars.

Remember to check out our online salvage auction page, where you will find a huge range of second hand small cars, family cars, automatics, EVs and commercial vehicles available for sale.

Ford Fiesta

Price from approx. £5,000 - £10,000

The Ford Fiesta is still one of the best-selling cars in the UK. Known particularly for its reliability, the Fiesta also possesses a solid reputation as an all-rounder. It offers crisp steering, low maintenance costs, and dampened suspension, providing comfort levels suiting a much larger car.

The car can be found with a good selection of efficient engines too, although later models tend to offer much more in terms of both style and entertainment options. There is also the bonus that used Ford parts are available from ASM.

Audi A1

Price from approx. £4,000 - £10,000

The A1 is a convenient miniature alternative to Audi’s larger models, capturing all the upmarket appeal of the brand with its clean, sporty design and aesthetically appealing interior. While its size makes it a fine candidate as a city car, there’s little compromise on the handling sharpness or engine efficiency we expect from this manufacturer.

Practicality can take a back seat to style, as there is less room for passengers in the rear of the vehicle than other contenders in this category. However, buying an Audi A1 second-hand, though it can be pricey, offers one of the most affordable routes to tasting luxury car experience.

Vauxhall Corsa

Price from approx. £4,000 - £10,000

The Vauxhall Corsa is now beginning to show its age. However, what it lacks compared to contemporary rivals is balanced by the Corsa’s wide availability and affordability on the used market. The car is no dud, though, offering famously competent ride and handling, as well as plenty of space in the back.

With a lively 1.0-litre petrol engine, the Corsa works perfectly well for trips to town and short motorway journeys. Nearly as popular as the Fiesta, there’s also no shortage of choice available and plenty of high mileage bargains to be found.

Renault Zoe

Price from approx. £4,500 - £10,000

The only electric vehicle on our list, the Zoe remains one of the most popular zero emission small cars around. A pure battery EV, the Zoe has a cutting-edge electric drivetrain and modern looks, and the latest models have larger ranges and better infotainment. You can pick up a used 8 or 9 year old Zoe for as little as £4,500.

Mini Hatchback

Price from approx. £4,000 - £10,000

Like the Audi A1, a used Mini Hatchback represents a fine opportunity to buy and enjoy a small car with more than a touch of upmarket quality. The Mini is famed for the pleasurable driving experience it offers, especially in petrol-engined versions providing nimble handling, quick acceleration and respectable fuel economy.

That’s not saying anything about its characterful styling or good-looking interiors. The Mini Hatchback can be expensive, even on the used market, while boot and passenger space leaves some to be desired. However, these aspects can be readily traded for the car’s great reliability and sheer fun factor.

Volkswagen Polo

Price from approx. £4,000 - £10,000

Like many on this list, the VW Polo’s key selling point is its dependability: generally, this is a reliable car you can buy without fear or trepidation. The Polo is undoubtedly well-built, providing comfortable ride, ample passenger space, plenty of room in the boot and highly respectable fuel economy.

Prices can sometimes trend on the high side, but you’ll likely be spoiled for choice with the large amount of petrol and diesel models available on the used market. Furthermore, you’ll never distrust the Polo’s build quality, offering something close to a ‘big’ car experience, whether driving through town or along the motorway.

Škoda Fabia

Price from approx. £3,500 - £10,000

If practicality is your guiding star when it comes to buying a used small car, you could do much worse than Škoda’s Fabia. While some smaller petrol engines can make acceleration a tad sluggish, the overall driving experience and build quality of the Fabia has been widely praised, topping multiple awards lists over the years.

The Skoda Fabia offers more boot space and legroom than many rival models, and what the model sometimes lacks for visual flair is made up by interior quality and a healthy range of equipment options.

Your life doesn’t have to be absolutely Fabia-less – cheap to run, it’s one of the best value small used cars you can buy, and one of the most well liked too.

Hyundai i20

Price from approx. £4,000 - £10,000

Handsome looks, generous standard equipment levels and plenty of interior space mean there’s a lot to like about the previous generation i20. The ride is a little unsettled and doesn’t handle as well as the best on offer, but Hyundai performs strongly in reliability surveys, and this is backed by the five-year warranty from new, which should make ownership relatively stress-free.

SEAT Ibiza

Price from approx. £3,000 - £10,000

The SEAT Ibiza has maintained a strong reputation since it was released, in the face of some stiff competition. Building upon the same platform as the Volkswagen Polo, the Ibiza’s primary selling point is the superior driving experience on offer.

In ride and handling, the car is almost unmatched, designed especially to promote a quick, sporty feel. While it can be less comfortable over bumps than other cars on our list, the Ibiza excels on the motorway, as well as in the town centre, with an enormous amount of boot space for all occasions.

Find the best second-hand small car with ASM

We hope this guide to the best used small cars provides some useful starting points on your journey to buying a great value second-hand vehicle.
Is it time to sell my Mini?

The Mini is one of Britain’s best loved cars, with over 60 years of heritage. Whether yours is a classic original Mini Clubman or new generation MINI made by BMW, they are difficult cars to part with.

Yet keeping a Mini on the road can be challenging. If you find your Mini needs regular repairs and has a long service history, perhaps selling your Mini is the best option.

Let’s look at five common problems that might affect your Mini.

When your Mini has major problems

1. Timing chain movement

Wear over time can create noise and vibration and develop slack in the mechanism of the timing chain. This should not be ignored as a loose timing chain can cause the chain to snap, resulting in huge damage to the engine.

2. Electric power steering pump

Low fluid or a faulty coolant fan can lead to failure of the pump. You will notice something is wrong if the steering becomes more rigid or it is harder to turn the wheel. Early Mini Coopers are especially susceptible to the failure of the electric power steering pump.

3. Water pump and thermostat housing

Leaks here can lead to damage, especially after more than 50,000 miles of driving. Replacing the water pump and thermostat housing on an early Mini is advisable as a preventative measure.

4. Clutch failure

This will lead to some major repair bills. As Minis are often used more for town than motorway driving the clutch can take some significant wear and tear. So, the clutch can fail at quite low mileage. You can look after your clutch by driving sensibly and avoiding sharp braking or acceleration. However, a burning smell is a sign that things might not all be well with your clutch.

5. Transmission

Transmission issues are a common problem for Mini drivers. Total transmission failure in first generation Mini Coopers is well known. Despite some contradictory opinions over this issue, most mechanics believe that the transmission fluid should be serviced after every 30,000-40,000 miles.

Of course, as well as these common problems your Mini could be affected by any number of common engine issues.

Selling your Mini at ASM

If you have decided to sell your car, there are some deciding factors on whether you will get a good price. These will be its mileage, service history and overall condition.

At ASM Auto Recycling, we value cars for both their scrap and resale value, so it doesn’t matter if your Mini is past its best. We will be able to give an accurate, instant valuation of your vehicle, based on a thorough in-person inspection by a qualified mechanic. We will grade your Mini and assess whether it only has scrap value, if its parts can be recycled, or if it can be sold in our online auction.

You might be surprised to see the number and quality of vehicles we have available for sale on our auction pages. Cars with an N or S grading are classified as repairable. This still may be the case even if they have suffered structural damage or been involved in an accident.

ASM offers a hassle-free way to sell your car.

As we all know, new electric cars are very expensive. It has become a real barrier to entry for drivers wanting to make the switch to EVs. But there is the second-hand market. It may not attract shiny government subsidies or discounts, but EVs are popping up more and more on the used car market, and at a more reasonable price.

In this guide we look at all the types of used EV you can buy, the benefits and what to look out for.

Are there many electric vehicles on the market?

It’s something of a myth that there aren’t many second hand EVs on the market. True, there aren’t anywhere near as many as petrol or diesel cars, but the EV market is extremely new by comparison. There will also be fewer people looking at these kinds of cars. A quick look on a popular website for used cars showed that there were over 10,000 electric vehicles available nationally (less than 3% of the total number but still plenty of options for buyers).

What kinds of electric vehicles can you buy?

Battery electric vehicles (BEVs)

Also known as PEVs or pure EVs, a BEV has an electric motor run entirely from the battery. They have zero emissions. Popular BEVs on the second-hand market include the BMW i3, Nissan Leaf, Tesla Model S and Renault Zoe.

Plug-in Hybrids (PHEVs)

Often seen as the steppingstone to a BEV, plug-in hybrids are cars with both an electric motor and a petrol or diesel engine. They use a combination of the two, usually starting a journey from the battery and then moving to the engine once the battery is depleted.

Hybrids (HEVs)

A hybrid is a car with a self-charging battery and a petrol or diesel engine. Hybrids can only run for a few miles on battery power alone, and they cannot be charged from the mains. They have lower CO2 emissions than a pure ICE (internal combustion engine) vehicle, so there are tax benefits for the driver.

What are the benefits of buying a second-hand EV?

The principal benefit of buying a used electric car is cost, obviously. A second-hand EV will be significantly cheaper than a brand-new model – for example, an 8-year-old Nissan Leaf with a 24kWh battery might cost around £6,000 (a brand-new version of the same model in 2021 cost £25,995).

If you have only ever driven a petrol or diesel car you will find that the maintenance costs of an EV are – on average – lower, for the simple reason that they have fewer moving parts to go wrong or age. It does not mean that there won’t be reliability or performance issues, just that those big workshop bills for engine parts you had never heard of, may be a thing of the past.

The biggest running costs of an EV is the battery pack – it will degrade over time and reduce the mileage that can be driven on a full charge. But new models will have a battery warranty lasting eight years, so you can significantly reduce the running costs of an EV by buying vehicles that are less than eight years old.

What things should you look out for with a used EV?

Battery age

As already mentioned, the age of the battery plays a very significant role in the performance of an electric vehicle. You may not be aware that for some manufacturers, the battery is leased separately to the car. This could amount to a monthly charge. It could keep the sale price of the used EV down but will be an additional running cost.

The range will also be much less for an older battery too. You can find this out by looking at the display on the dashboard after a full charge – this will indicate how many miles can be driven before the battery is discharged.

Is an EV right for you?

If you drive long distances on motorways, a second-hand EV is probably not going to be suitable for you. You will have to charge up far more frequently than with a brand-new model, and you will find that you will lose range more quickly too. This is because you drive faster and brake less on motorways, and in some models braking harvests energy for the battery. A used EV is better as a run-around or for town driving, as the battery will deplete less with the stop-start nature of these journeys.

Can you afford the electricity costs?

One of the big ticks for electric cars have always been the costs of charging compared to that of the petrol or diesel pump. EV drivers always made significant savings here, but with the rising cost of electricity in recent months this is no longer the case, especially when forecourt prices start to fall. Charging at home is still the cheapest option, but the cost of domestic electricity is on an upward curve.

However, the cost of using public charging points has risen so much that petrol and diesel is now only fractionally more expensive. The RAC reported that the cost of using a ‘rapid’ charging point increased by 42% between May and September 2022, so that electricity from this source now costs 18p per mile, compared to 19p for petrol and 21p for diesel.

Where are your nearest public charging points?

Next to price, the biggest stumbling block to EV adoption is the lack of charging points in the UK for people without access to off-street parking. This makes charging a vehicle more difficult, time-consuming and expensive. Do some research and find out where you can charge and how quickly – Zap-Map gives the locations of all publicly accessible charging points in the UK, what speeds they charge at and their current operational status.

Do all the normal checks

Look for all the things you would do normally on a petrol or diesel car. Are there signs of wear and tear on the bodywork? Check the condition of the brake discs and pads; take the car for a test drive and look out for any warning lights on the dashboard or sounds from the car – these should be easy to hear, as there will be no engine noise on a BEV. Make sure you see the logbook and inspect the car’s service history.

Sell your used car at ASM

If you are looking to get a good deal for your used car before buying a used electric, why not try ASM Auto Recycling?
Are used car prices in the UK fair?

Are you thinking about buying a used car, but not sure about why prices are so high in the UK at the moment? There’s quite a few reasons why, but it doesn’t mean it’s impossible to get a good deal.

Find out how to make sure you’re seeing the right average used car prices, and what options you have.

Why are prices so high right now?

Fuel prices and the cost of household gas are at a record high, so it perhaps won’t surprise you to know that the cost-of-living crisis has also spread to the second-hand car market.

According to the latest figures from Auto Trader, used car prices rose 28% year on year in May 2022, with the average used car price now £17,385. That’s £3,400 higher than a year ago. This has also pushed prices of some family-friendly models, having doubled in that same period. So why are these price increases happening?

Post-lockdown boom

In the immediate periods after the Covid-19 lockdowns of 2020 and 2021, car sales surged. Demand was high from consumers who not only had more opportunities to get to dealerships but were using their cars more. After a short burst of frenzied activity, manufacturing was struggling to keep up with the demand.

Global chip shortage

Factories took a long time to get back to pre-Covid levels of activity. More seriously, the supply issues affecting the electronic industry have massively impacted car production. The lack of electronic components available to manufacturers mean that there have been huge falls in the number of new vehicles coming onto the car market. People are turning to the used sector instead, and the rise in demand is having a rather obvious effect on prices.

Demand is high, stock is low

Due to the quiet new car market, fewer used cars are being traded in than normal. According to a recent poll of 2,000 UK drivers by Opinium on behalf of the insurance provider GAP (Guaranteed Asset Protection), half of the motorists surveyed said they were hanging onto their current cars longer than they usually would. There are simply not the new cars about for them to be traded in for. So, prices are rising because stocks of used vehicles are so low.

There’s no need to despair, though. If you are looking to save money and buy a used car, you could check out our online auction. Over 2,500 damage-repairable vehicles are added weekly. All our reserve prices are fair, and the vehicles are a mix of different levels of damaged stock – some minor. Check out our guide to buying a salvage car, if you’re unsure.

How can you tell you are getting a fair price?

So how can you judge if a price for a used car is reasonable or not? You could use tools like Auto Trader’s price indicator, a colour-coded price rating scale that tells you if a price is Low, Great, Good, Fair or High.

You could also use any one of the industry-standard car value guides, such as Kelley Blue Book or Edmunds.

Don’t get taken for a ride by car dealers or private sellers. Refer to the tried and trusted metrics: mileage, service history and condition. If a car just doesn’t look the price that you are being quoted, it probably isn’t.

Get a fair price for your used car at ASM

If you are looking to get a good deal for your used car before buying another, why not try ASM Auto Recycling?

If you’re looking for an automatic on the used car market, this guide is to help you make a considered choice. Automatic vehicles are often considered more convenient and easier to handle, as you only need to change gears for parking or reversing, plus can allow for more focus on driving as you have less to think about.

Remember prices will vary depending on many factors, so do as much research as you can before you buy.

The best automatic cars to buy

Click on a model to jump to more information.

Looking for one of these cars? Check our salvage auction for automatic vehicles.

Our criteria for the list

The used car market can sometimes seem daunting with the sheer amount of choice available. We know there’s more to your decision than price and availability, which is why you’ll find a carefully chosen selection of vehicles here, each judged by:

Running costs

Safety features

Ride comfort

Overall practicality (under various driving conditions)

Honda Accord

Whether you choose petrol or diesel, an automatic Accord is nearly always more reliable than a manual version. Robust and with an excellent range of additional features, especially if you buy an Executive model, the Accord is also good value for money. Many describe the driving experience as ‘comfortable’, especially important if this is a car you’ll use for longer journeys. Supporting those longer journeys is the engine efficiency, once again a feature for both petrol and diesel models.

Skoda Kodiaq

Automatic versions of this SUV are not as common as manual in the second-hand market, but the ones you do find often have high-spec interiors. You can get a five-seat version with an enormous boot that could be converted into an additional two seats, meaning the ultimate flexibility for families. Many people choose the Kodiaq for its power (especially the diesel versions) and enjoy the features that comes as standard on most models, including rear parking sensors and leather steering wheel.

Mercedes-Benz CLS

In the CLS you will find a smooth ride thanks to its strong and reliable automatic gearbox. However, this isn’t the most spacious car, so if you’re looking to pack the boot or fit more than four people inside, it’s not for you. The space it does have however is more than comfortable. Should you be looking at the petrol edition of this car, the CLS 400, it comes with an electric sunroof, reversing camera and keyless entry.

Toyota Yaris

A very popular small car, the Yaris still manages to have plenty of room in the boot and back seat for most people’s purposes. The first-generation Yaris came with a reliable and smooth torque converter automatic gearbox and inside any Yaris, you’ll find a modern interior with a centrally mounted digital speedometer. It’s a great choice for urban living as it’s compact, but also has great fuel economy for those long-weekend trips.

Ford Fiesta

The Fiesta has won numerous ‘best car’ awards, thanks to its reliability, simple yet effective interior, and affordability. Its 1.0-litre turbo models come with Ford’s Powershift dual-clutch automatic gearbox and second-hand Fiestas are quite easy to find, often with lower mileage than expected too. The Fiesta is nearly always described as excellent to drive, with sharp handling and comfortable seats.

Kia Ceed

Kias have an excellent reputation for being dependable and the Ceed is no exception. Automatic versions are cost-effective and a good choice for families thanks to a good amount of space and a smooth ride. The torque converter automatic gearbox is available with a variety of models, both petrol and diesel, and has a good reputation for reliability too.

Jaguar S-Type

Okay, so the S-Type isn’t going to win any prizes for modernity in the looks department. But it is at least ageing gracefully, with familiarity having dulled the shock of its slightly beaky nose. And, under the skin, the later S-Types that this budget will afford you are genuinely great cars, with a choice of excellent petrol and diesel engines all attached to smooth, swift-changing automatic gearboxes. What’s more, few cars feel this opulent inside for the cash. The interior is dominated by slabs of real wood surrounded by great swathes of leather, while all S-Types of this era are laden with toys, making driving one a truly luxurious experience. Later S-Types are terrific to drive, too, with well-controlled handling and smooth suspension.

BMW 5 Series

The 5 Series has always been one of our favourite luxury cars. Not only does it deliver the involving handling for which BMWs have become well-known, but it also offers a classy interior and, in the right specification, a comfortable ride. Diesel engines are efficient, while petrol-powered alternatives are smooth, powerful and widely available. Moreover, the torque converter automatic gearbox in this generation of the 5 Series has held up well reliability-wise. While the rest of the car is expensive to fix if it does go wrong, a well-maintained example shouldn’t do so.

Lexus IS 200

With the IS 200, Lexus wanted to take the fight to the BMW 3 Series. Sadly, the IS 200 wasn’t quite as rounded a proposition, but these days it makes a great automatic used buy, thanks to a reputation for excellent reliability that’s rather better than most. What’s more, an automatic model is easy to find. And with a creamy six-cylinder powerplant and smooth automatic gearbox, it’s a satisfying thing to drive, too. Inside, you’ll find an interior that’s a little dated but rather interesting, particularly the chronometer-inspired dials and two-tone steering wheel. What’s more, as with any Lexus, it should still feel as tightly screwed together as the day it was made.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Even for less than five figures, you can still get hold of a choice Mercedes automatic in the form of an E-Class – one of the most plutocratic luxury cars around. We like the smooth E350 CDI best, but any E-Class is a solid used buy and, with Mercedes’ dependable automatic gearboxes as standard, shouldn’t let you down. The interior fittings aren’t quite as solid as we’d like but, apart from that, the E-Class is a pleasing thing to drive and spend time in. It’s spacious in both the front and rear, too, and has the added benefit of a capacious boot.

ASM can help you find the best used automatic car

This guide should provide some useful starting points for buying a great value second-hand vehicle.
