Younger drivers ‘less likely’ to have their car serviced, say SMMT

A new survey of 2,000 UK motorists by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has revealed that older drivers are far more likely to stick to car servicing schedules than younger, newly qualified motorists.
One in 10 young drivers aged between 18 and 24 indicated they had never serviced their car, with that figure dropping to just one in 50 drivers aged 55 and above.
Over half of young motorists (57 per cent) admitted to not being aware of ways to improve their vehicle’s efficiency through software upgrades direct from the vehicle manufacturer.
Despite increasing running costs hitting UK motorists hard in the last few years, it is a false economy not to have a vehicle serviced as it can soon develop expensive problems and increase the risk of an accident or breakdown.
Paul Everitt, chief executive of the SMMT, said: “A significant number of drivers are putting themselves at greater risk of an accident, breakdown or costly repair by not taking their cars to a dealership for servicing.
“A properly maintained car is not only more fuel-efficient, but will be safer and more reliable. Putting off service and repair work is a false economy.
“To stay safe and keep costs down, motorists should stick to servicing schedules and have repairs carried out promptly at a manufacturer main dealer.”
As a result of many young drivers failing to adequately service their vehicles there is almost certain to be an increase of written-off and end-of-life vehicles sitting on driveways in the coming months.
