Up to 10,000 breakdowns predicted for the New Year, according to the RAC
Wednesday, 2 January 2013
Thousands of drivers across the UK were waking up for their first day back at work facing a false start with vehicles that had gone unused over the festive season failing to start.
The RAC warned that more than 10,000 breakdowns were likely on Weds 2nd January alone – 40 per cent more than any other day – as the nation returns to work following the Christmas period.
Families with second cars that went unused over the festive holiday were most susceptible to breakdowns at this time of year due to battery failures.
David Bizley, technical director of the RAC, said: “The majority of breakdowns we attend to on the return to work after the Christmas holidays are for vehicles that won’t start.
“The combination of a long break where vehicles aren’t used much, if at all, and cold damp weather is a recipe for battery trouble.
“A car’s electrical system has to work a lot harder at this time of year as drivers are more likely to use their lights, heated windows as well as the heater fan.
The starter motor also has to work harder to start the engine on these cold mornings, making a battery failure more likely.”
Motorists are advised by the RAC to park vehicles in garages, if possible, when they are out of action for an extended period of time.
The breakdown of a vehicle is the last thing vehicle owners need to welcome in the New Year. But in the event that your vehicle is reaching the end of its lifecycle it is important to deal with the situation responsibly in an environmentally friendly manner.
Scrapping your end-of-life car is the cleanest, most efficient way to guard against the release of hazardous waste into the environment.
At ASM Auto Recycling our modern 11-bay vehicle dismantling workshops are equipped to handle the dismantling, testing and cleaning of all kinds of road vehicles in accordance with the Environment Agency’s ELV Directive.
